臼杵城はキリシタン大名大友宗麟により臼杵湾に浮かぶ丹生島に永禄5年（1562年）に築かれ、江戸時代は稲葉家が治める臼杵藩五万石の城として幾多の歴史を積み重ねてきました。
当時は海に囲まれた城でしたが、現在は埋立により陸続きになっています。
その城跡は現在臼杵公園として整備されており、春には約1,000の桜が咲き誇る県南有数の花見スポットとなっています。
