鉄輪（かんなわ）と同じく別府温泉発祥の地と呼ばれる「浜脇温泉」。浜から温泉が湧き出る様子から、“浜わき(脇)”の地名が生まれたと伝えられます。昭和初期に浜脇東と西温泉が合併し、鉄筋コンクリート造で建設。創業当初から多くの利用者でにぎわい、現在も親しまれている温泉です。市営温泉の中では珍しく、午前6時30分から翌日の午前1時まで営業しています。地域住民の生活に密着した営業時間と、入浴料が100円とリーズナブルなことが長年愛される秘訣と言えます。
