豊後風土記に“赤湯泉”と記された、日本最古の天然地獄「血の池地獄」です。これぞ地獄と言うに相応しい煮えたぎる熱泥は、噴き出される蒸気まで赤く染めています。
地獄から噴出する真っ赤な粘土で作られる“血の池軟膏”は、血の池地獄だけで販売されており、湿疹ややけど等の皮膚病によく効くとお土産に人気です。
平成21年には、龍巻地獄、海地獄、白池地獄と共に、国の名勝に指定されました。
