十六羅漢の前を通り長い階段を登り切ると、右前方に愛染堂があります。
竹田市に現存する最も古い建物で、寛永12年に日光東照宮造営奉行であった二代藩主・中川久盛が、連れ帰った飛騨の匠に造らせた宝形造の寺です。正式には願成院（がんじょういん）本堂といい、国の重要文化財に指定されています。
内部には本尊の愛染明王が安置され、恋愛成就の御堂としても有名です。愛染堂の軒下を飾る天邪鬼の彫刻や、人面の彫刻は一見の価値があります。
