宇佐八幡を創立した大神比義の開基で、奈良時代末に行基が中興したと伝えられており、豊後の国で最初に建立された愛宕神社でもあると言う、九州でも歴史のある古社の一つです。祭神は「いざなみのみこと」「かぐつちのみこと」の二神です。
毎年1月24日に開催される春季大祭では、柴燈護摩等が行われ、8月24日に開催される秋季大祭では神楽の奉納が行われます。
