「大門櫓」は17世紀初頭、臼杵藩の藩主であった稲葉氏入城直後に建てられました。
宝暦13年の大火で焼失したあと、５年後再建されたものの明治初年の廃城によって取り壊されたましたが、平成13年、古絵図や写真を基に地元の職人が伝統工法を駆使して可能な限り江戸末期の姿となるよう復元されました。
威風堂々たる姿は小高い丘の上にあり 臼杵の町が一望できます。
