緑深い上野丘公園の敷地内にある大分市美術館は、自然環境に調和した落ち着いた雰囲気の建物が印象的。
館内は、常設展示棟と企画展示棟とに分かれており、4つの常設展示室では、これまで収集に努めてきた近世絵画から現代美術にいたる約3,000点以上の所蔵作品の中から、国指定重要文化財の田能村竹田の豊後南画や高山辰雄の日本画など、大分ゆかりの作家の作品を中心にジャンル別に展示しています。
また、企画展示室では年間数回の特別展を開催しています。
