くじゅう連山や阿蘇くじゅう国定公園の山々に囲まれ、火山による地熱エネルギーに恵まれた立地に位置する「八丁原地熱発電所」。日本最大の地熱発電所で、1号機と2号機を合わせて総出力は11万kWにおよびます。
併設する展示館では地熱発電の仕組みや種類をパネルやビデオで紹介しており、発電所内をガイドの案内で見学することができます。周辺にある小松地獄では、大自然の中に吹き上がる蒸気や噴出する熱泥の様子を散策道から観察できます。
