おおいた姫島ジオパークを代表するジオサイトで、島髄一の景勝地である「観音崎」は、高さ40mにおよび、全国的に珍しい乳白色の黒曜石の断崖が120mにも広がります。露天の黒曜石は非常に貴重で、平成19年に観音崎一帯が「姫島の黒曜石産地」として国の天然記念物に指定されています。
断崖の先には姫島七不思議のひとつ「千人堂」があり、観光スポットとして知られています。
