羽の模様が鮮やかな「アサギマダラ」は、蝶目・タテハ蝶科・マダラ蝶亜科に分類される蝶の一種で、長距離を移動することで知られています。最大で2000km移動する渡り蝶は、姫島に自生する“スナビキソウ”の蜜を求めて5～6月上旬に南の地から飛来し、羽を休めます。
更に、北の地に飛び立ち、10月中旬頃にその世代を交代した蝶が北から南へ向かう途中、姫島に生える“フジバカマ”の花を求めて休息します。
春は、北西部の“みつけ海岸”などで見られ、多い時で約1000頭を超える神秘的現象が体験できる場所です。
