施設名 岩戸寺（いわとじ）

国東半島の中央にそびえる両子山と文殊山の北東、国東町の北のはずれに位置する岩戸寺は、養老3年(719)に仁聞菩薩（にもんぼさつ）の開創と伝えられる六郷満山末山（すえやま）本寺の一つでした。
全盛時には、山六坊、里六坊の十二坊を有し、六郷満山のなかでも民衆教化・布教の地として重要な地位にありましたが、兵火に遭って全山焼失した後衰退しました。
満山寺院の特色である山寺形式をよく残し、本尊の平安後期のカヤの一木彫の本尊薬師如来像をはじめ、国東半島に数ある国東塔の中で最も古く優れていると言われる国東塔、銘のあるものとしては最古のものと言われる仁王像など、多くの有形文化財を残している寺です。
そして、今では少なくなった『修正鬼会（しゅじょうおにえ）』（国の重要無形民俗文化財）が、成仏寺と一年交代で行なわれています。
