自性寺は、中津藩主・奥平家歴代の菩提寺です。
南画の大家・池大雅（いけのたいが）の書画約50点を展示しています。これは十二代住職が大雅と親交があり、大雅、玉蘭夫妻が寺に滞在中に描いたものと伝わっています。池大雅は、九州の美しい景色にふれて自由に筆をふるい、これらの書画は1778年（安永7年）、書院の襖に貼られました。その後、十代藩主・昌高公が「大雅堂」と染筆、扁額を掲げてから、この書院を「大雅堂」と呼ぶようになりました。
