江戸時代の杵築城下の番所はここ「北浜口番所」のほか「城の鼻口番所」「魚町口番所」「寺町口番所」「馬場尾口番所」「清水寺口番所」の６箇所にありました。当時は坂の下に番所があり、常に番人を置き、関所と同じ役目をしていました。城下町の治安を守るため、時間になると大戸を閉め、自由に出入りできないよう、人や物資の出入りを厳しく取り締まっていました。坂の下は現在は住宅が建ち並んでいますが、かつては海で、大阪、高松、松山などから物資だけでなく、文化や情報も入ってきました。
