六郷満山霊場23番札所です。千燈寺は旧千燈寺の西の坊でしたが、本寺が戦国時代の兵火によって焼失し、明治になって移転し、旧下払坊と合併して現在の地を寺地としたと言われています。境内入り口にある５メートルもの宝篋印塔が目を引きます。慶応元（1865）の作と比較的新しいですが、大日如来像を浮き彫りにした見事なものです。他にも、六郷満山の修験者たちの守護神として崇められていた太郎天像（たろうてんぞう）や、檜の寄木造りによる木造如来像などが安置されています。
