蓮華寺は、浮津密乗院（うきつみつじょういん）と名乗り大神氏の菩提寺だったといわれています。大神氏滅亡後は、大神の愛宕神社の西側にあって円海寺と称していました。慶長8年（1603）木下延俊が、日出城鬼門鎮護のため現在地に移し、日出藩の祈祷所として蓮華寺と改名しました。この寺に保存されている「木造千手観音立像」「絹本着色仏涅槃図」は、鎌倉時代の作で県の指定文化財になっています。裏庭には、樹齢400年の「さつきの庭」もあります。
