阿蘇くじゅう国立公園内にある黒岳は、由布市庄内町から竹田市久住町にかけて広がる原生林に埋め尽くされた雄大な山です。冬になると、広葉樹の木立が黒味を帯び、山全体が黒っぽくなることからその名が付いたと言われています。
春の山開きのシーズンになると、4月から5月にはツクシシャクナゲが、5月下旬から6月にかけてはミヤマキリシマが見頃を迎えます。
また、紅葉に彩られる10月にも、多くの登山客で賑わいます。
