建造された明治12年より改築を重ね、明治35年に木造瓦葺の共同温泉が完成しました。当初は竹屋根葺きの浴場であり、これが瓦葺きに改修されたため、「竹瓦温泉」と名称がつきました。今や、別府温泉のシンボル的な浴場になり、造りも豪華な唐破風造の木造建築で、毎年入浴者と共に見物者も多く、特に若い女性や外国の観光客の方々に喜ばれています。普通浴場と名物の砂湯があり、砂湯に仰向けに寝ると、砂掛けさんが温泉で暖められた砂を上手にお腹から足、肩と掛けてくれて、その心地よさは一度は体験の価値ありです。
