豊臣秀吉に仕えた石田三成の妹婿・福原直高から竹中重利が引き継ぐ形で築かれた大分城は、別名・府内城（ふないじょう）とも呼ばれていました。
現在は、天守閣のあった本丸周辺の水堀は埋められ、大分城址公園として利用されています。
桜の名所としても知られており、毎年70本以上のソメイヨシノが咲き始めると、花見客で賑わいます。城址の石垣から見ることができる桜色の絨毯は、一見の価値ありです。
