臼杵城のお膝元に位置する二王座は、阿蘇山の火山灰が固まってできた凝灰岩の丘で、あちこちの岩を削り取って道を通しました。狭い路地のいたるところに城下町特有の面影が残っていて、高い石垣、重厚感のある瓦屋根、白壁の建物や多くの寺院が坂道沿いに長く続きます。
旧真光寺の前は「切り通し」と呼ばれる、臼杵を代表する景観のひとつです。特に、雨が降った後の濡れた石畳は雰囲気があります。
平成5年11月には、国の都市景観100選にも選ばれています。
