野上弥生子は、小説『海神丸』『迷路』『秀吉と利休』など数々の作品で知られる臼杵出身の女流作家です。99歳で亡くなるまで現役作家として活躍した偉業を讃えるため、生家の一部を文学記念館として公開しています。幼少時代の勉強部屋も復元されており、遺品や著作など約200点を超える展示を行っています。
外から見ると昔ながらの民家の一つに見え、実際にここで幼少期を過ごした野上弥生子が、近くに感じられます。
