合元寺（ごうがんじ）は1587年(天正15)、黒田官兵衛孝高によって建立されました。
深紅に塗られた壁は城下町・中津の中でもひときわ強烈な印象を与え、別名・赤壁寺とよばれています。
豊臣秀吉の時代、豊前の実力者だった宇都宮鎮房（しげふさ）が騙し討ちに遇い、この寺を宿舎にしていた家臣たちも全員討ち死。その時の血潮を浴びた門前の白壁は何度塗り替えても血痕が浮き出るため、ついに赤壁に塗り替えたといわれています。当時の激戦の様子は現在も境内の大黒柱に刀の痕が点々と残されています。
