玖珠郡九重町から竹田市北部にかけて広がる「くじゅう連山」。
九州本土最高峰の中岳（標高1,791m）をはじめ、標高約1,700m級の山々が連なっており、“九州の屋根”とも呼ばれています。5月下旬から6月中旬にかけて、国の天然記念物に指定されているミヤマキリシマが山頂をピンクに染め、秋にはまるでじゅうたんを敷き詰めたかのように鮮やかな紅葉が山々を彩り、登山客を楽しませてくれます。
