阿蘇山を水源とする“筑後川”は、流路延長143km、流域面積約2,860平方kmの河川で、九州地方最大の規模を誇ります。九州地方北部を東から西へ有明海に注ぐ川の上流は「三隈川」と呼ばれ、“水郷日田”と呼ばれるほど豊かな水があふれることで知られています。
川沿いには温泉旅館が立ち並び、遊船（屋形船）での宴や、夏場に行われる鵜飼を見ながらの趣き深い宴会が楽しまれています。
また、様々なイベントも行われており、毎年５月の“川開き観光祭”では盛大な花火が打ち上げられ、１１月の“千年あかり”では竹あかりが川面を照らします。
