九州各地からの参拝客も多い椿堂（遍照院／へんしょういん）は、弘法大使ゆかりの名刹として知られています。
その名も、弘法大師が祈祷をした際に地面に杖を突き立てると、地面からは清水が湧き出し、杖は椿の大樹となったとされる言い伝えを由来としています。お堂の裏の岩屋からは、万病に効くと言われる霊水が今なお湧出しています。
本堂の軒先には、快癒のお礼に納められた無数の黒髪やギプスなどが並んでいます。
