国東半島北方5kmの沖合にある姫島村は、国東半島の北東部、瀬戸内海西端に位置し、伊美港からフェリーで約20分。
明治35年から2年の工事を経て島に建設された「姫島灯台」は、37年に点灯された歴史ある建造物です。慶長10年に小倉藩主の細川忠興が姫島に石積みのかがり火灯台を設けたと言われ、火を用いたことが和式灯台の始まりです。
高さ12mの白く円形の美しい石造りで、素材は花崗岩で作られた灯台です。海からの高さは約57mで十万カンデラの光を発し、光達距離は二十海里（約37km）にもなります。
