別府湾を見下ろす高台の庄屋屋敷の庭に、樹齢４００年を越える山桜の木があります。
「魚見（うおみ）桜」と言う名前は、開花が普通の桜よりも半月程早く、かつて別府湾の漁師達が咲き具合を見て漁の目安としたことからついたと言われています。
台風の被害により、枝分かれをした片方は折れてしまったものの、接ぎ穂をした２世桜が育っており、桜を囲むように咲く菜の花と共に、毎年春の訪れを告げています。
また、毎年３月中旬には魚見桜まつりが行なわれ、多くの人で賑わいます。
