太平洋戦争の末期、敗色が日に日に濃くなる中、１人で操縦する魚雷艇で敵艦を撃沈する人間魚雷「回天」が考案され、特攻訓練のために作られた基地の跡地があります。
水雷壕、回天格納庫、実用頭部格納庫の横穴の他、回天の水漏れ等の検査をした調整場プールや変電所跡などが残っています。
戦争の残酷さを今に伝え、作戦で散った人々の慰霊のため、戦時は基地内にあった回天神社は近隣の住吉神社の境内に移され、毎年慰霊祭が行なわれています。
