光岡城は、貞和６年（１３５０年）に赤尾種綱が築城したとされ、標高１３０ｍの丘の上にあり、中央平坦部は南北８０ｍ、東西３５ｍで、周囲を空堀と二重の土塁が囲んでいます。保存状態が良好で、城の遺構を充分に確認でき、築造の時期が明らかである点で重要な史跡とされています。現在は、土塁や空堀が復元され県指定史跡「光岡城跡公園」として、トイレや駐車場が整備されています。宇佐平野や豊前海など、美しい景色も望めるので、お弁当を持って家族でピクニックというのもいいかもしれません。
