宮崎県とのほぼ県境に位置し、西南の役の古戦場として知られています。今なお塹壕の跡が残るここで、明治10年官軍と薩摩軍との戦いが繰り広げられました。同年5月上旬から7月中旬までの2ヶ月間、直川村（当時は五ヶ村）で戦闘が続けられ、薩摩軍はこちらで防備を固めていましたが、7月16日、篠突く雨の中の急襲に虚を突かれ、全滅しました。
辺りにはこの戦いに没した官軍と薩摩軍兵士の墓が建てられています。
