本匠地区最高峰の山で天気のよい日は九重連山や阿蘇山も見ることができます。残念ながら佐伯市内は山の陰に隠れて所々しか見ることができませんが大野川流域の展望は最高で、空に近い360度パノラマの世界は一見の価値有です。また、はい楯山を語るときに忘れてはならないのが道路脇の岩に見られる貝などの化石です。一説によると中世代白亜紀のものとも言われています。本匠で一番高い山がその昔は海底であったその証に自然の力の脅威を感じ取れます。
