五所明神社は、旧毛利藩、総鎮守の神一宮の位として佐伯市全域に氏子、崇敬者を持つお宮です。大同元年（806）の創祀と伝えられる近郷で最も古く、加茂・春日・住吉・梅ノ宮・稲荷の五所の明神を祭神としています。
五所明神の境内にあるナギの木は、樹高約22m、胸高周長は2m40cmを越え、県の天然記念物に指定されています。ほぼ同時代に植えられたと推測される同じ大きさのものが弥生洞明寺、本匠宿善寺にあり、いずれも県指定天然記念物となっています。
