熊沢蕃山（くまざわばんざん）は、備前岡山の儒学者で岡藩主・中川久清公によって招かれました。岡藩においては治山治水の指導をしています。
今日の城原井路（竹田市）や緒方井路（豊後大野市）の工事について助言を与え、三宅山の植林にも携わりました。また、藩主も藩士とともに蕃山の講義を聴講したと伝えられています。
蕃山は陽明学派に属し、岡藩学校の底流をなす考えの基礎も築きました。
