岡城阯に残る「近戸門（ちかどもん）」は、かつて城下に通じる門でした。5代藩主・中川久通公は母が亡くなった時にこの門を通って岡城に帰り、弔意を示したとされています。門の側に火災予防を呼びかける折れた石柱があります。出て左側の門には、車軸築の大きな石である力石も見られます。
竹田を代表する作曲家・瀧廉太郎も学校の裏山にあたる岡城に遊びに来たと言われます。全校生徒の前で尺八を演奏したという場所もこの辺りだったかもしれません。
